Member Since: 08 Media Specialties: Wood; City: OLIN State: North Carolina County: Iredell County, NC Bio: Life long tinkerer/piddler/projecter ect: I have dabbled in Woodworking,Carving,Blacksmithing. My intrest in woodworking started as a young boy watching my dad and grandpaw cutting and fitting boards to build various sheds and shop buildigs around our homes. I remember once asking, my grandpaw if could use his drawknife. He asked " what for " I said "I don't know, to cut some of them curly pieces off guess" So he must have saw the spark in my eye, because he stopped what he was doing and clamped a piece of 2 by 4 in a vice, showed me how to hold the drawknife, and how if you cut in one direction (against the grain of the wood) the blade would dig into the wood ,splintering it, but if cut the other direction (with the grain) the blade glide through the wood smoothly, producing the thin curly shavings, I had watched him make in wonder ! Well any way you get the idea, and 40 or so years later I still enjoy the feel of a sharp blade sliceing along with the grain, producing a thin curly shaving. Little did I know way back then that my Grand paw was teaching me a life lesson, for when you live you life against the grain, the result is rough and jagged. But if you live your life with the grain, your life is smooth, and productive! Mobile: 704-929-1720 This Member's Galleries: This bio page has been viewed 2010 times.
