He continued his education at Catawba College in Salisbury, NC and at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. From 1981 to today, his work has been in the fashion industry. After an initial period in sales at Barney’s New York, he progressed to assistant designer at Flair, a lingerie manufacturer. For twenty years, he was head patternmaker and co-designer at Sander Witlin, Inc, an haute couture design firm. During this time, he also designed sportswear for Popko & Colvard; was a freelance technical designer for Jason Tynan, a private label manufacturer; and was a designer and co-owner of Etre aux Anges, a children’s couture business, all in New York. Since returning to Elkin, Bill has worked as the haute couture designer of his own business, Couture Design Group, and the creative director of a new retail fashion boutique on West Main Street, Love and Scandal. Bill’s haute couture specialization is producing one-of a-kind, custom-made clothing for an individual client, tailored exactly to that client's needs and desires and perfectly custom fitted. He says, “I guarantee that I'll visually take off a minimum of five years and ten pounds. Most clients find my services useful for bridal, evening, costumes, and special occasion clothing. I'm especially useful for hard-to-fit women.” Bill enjoys creating wearable art: art that can be worn, particularly hand painting on silk. He also combines hand-dying and fiber art techniques with couture dressmaking. Bill is the program director and a former board member of the Foothills Arts Council.
