Member Since: 2006 Media Specialties: Clay; City: Dobson State: North Carolina County: Surry County, NC Bio: Now residing in North Carolina for forty years, I have been involved with the arts in many capacities. After college, I set up a studio and began to develop my own style. Opening a retail store to sell my work, as well as the work of area artists, soon led to the teaching of my craft from the back room. As a Third Century Artist under the Arts Council in Salisbury, I engaged in residencies in local schools, taught pottery to handicapped populations and continued to grow in my own work. I served as the artist-in-residence for Rowan Community College for one year. A three-part wall hanging is owned by the Carolina Bank of Kings Mountain. This sculptural relief depicts an old apple tree at the edge of the orchard, the farmer's red pickup truck loading baskets and following the winding dirt road off toward the mountains. Life with a husband and two children turned me to a new direction for a period of time. I stayed active in the arts as a middle school art teacher and most recently worked as an administrative director for three different arts councils where our family resided. At the present time, I am most fortunate to be able to become a full-time potter once again. This has connected me to the Yadkin Valley Craft Guild, an organization which I believe serves all artists in many capacities for development of their craft and means of support from their craft. My studio is set up in Dobson, NC where I am surrounded by nature and a vineyard which is part of the Yadkin Valley area's agricultural development. This has influenced some of my present work. Always I have focused on functional pottery. It might be a soup tureen for the kitchen or a bird bath for the garden, but the decorative nature of each piece turns it sculptural. I like relief form and three dimensional form for the pieces that are not production. My glazes and colors are very earthy and simple.
